STI prevalence – By Joyline
The year 2008 did not only bring hunger, starvation and suffering to the citizens of Zimbabwe but the genesis of the HIV/AIDS which saw the deaths of many people as there was no knowledge on how this could be cured or rather curbed from because of the ignorance we Africans can at times have. There was need for people to know what this was about and how they could solve it; confusion filled the streets of Zimbabwe as parents would die at times the father because of promiscuity and the mother because she would have contracted it from the husband.
Fast forward now in the 21st century this virus/syndrome has since been accepted and many get to survive with it giving thanks to the Anti-Retroviral that are now there. These have helped families to continue living and have tried to stabilize the population and death rates. It was previously known that only the parents would contract this and the children through the parents but now because of certain factors that we can blame including technology which has contributed to our cultural erosion even teenagers and tweens are now at risk because of the lifestyle they are living.
The causes of these being poverty looking at the background of most students who then venture into the “blesser business” as they will be looking for greener pastures and, in the end, they contract the STIs. Some may also be copying what they would be seeing others do which then calls for the whole nation to come together and help today’s generation on the theme of being content with what they would be having.
The University of Zimbabwe with the introduction of the show “Campus Crush” and “Wakambondidirei” it has been indicated that young people are being affected by STIs as some of the couples are breaking up on these reality shows reason being the other would-be using PREP. This then showing that STIs and HIV/AIDS cases are present at colleges and universities as we find the students protecting themselves from these.
Another example would be the rate of students who seek medication for STIs at colleges and universities as shown by the statistics in the nearby clinics and hospitals taking into consideration Midlands State University, Bindura University of Science only to mention a few.
The rate of students who die per year because of STIs and HIV is also enough evidence to show that these cases are present and very much true.
